The following is a contemporary worship song that I wrote in 1991, while I was active in a mainstream Protestant congregation that has programmed worship. Sometime, when I’m feeling “in voice,” I may take the laptop computer over to the piano and try to record the chorus and a verse.
“Share the Gift”
by Elizabeth W. Bennefeld
Chorus:
Share the gift of love with the whole world,
Share the gift of love with your friends.
Share God’s gift of love through his risen son.
Now and for ever, Amen.
Verse 1:
I’ve called you to love one another,
just as I have loved you.
Love binds the whole world together
and makes everything new.
Chorus:
Share the gift of love …
Verse 2:
If you do as I have commanded
and live within my love,
my joy will always be in you—
your cup of joy will be full.
Chorus:
Share the gift of love …
Verse 3:
As you’ve trusted in God the Father,
Place your trust also in me.
Through faith you’ll live forever.
By faith you’ve been set free.
Chorus:
Share the gift of love …
Verse 4:
I’m leaving you with a gift,
peace of heart and of mind,
and the peace I give isn’t fragile
like the peace of this world, you’ll find.
Chorus:
Share the gift of peace with the whole world,
Share the gift of peace with your friends.
Share God’s gift of love through his risen son.
Now and for ever, Amen.
